I'm not referring to bitching at the cashier at the grocery store to get your gallon of milk for $2.15 instead of $2.35...I'm talking about people being manipulative in ways that could be hurtful and have long term lasting effects. In the past week I have witnessed people stringing each other along, with alterior motives to end things once they get what they want. I have used both Palm and Pocket PC devices for the past 6 years and after all that time I know what to expect from the different companies and their products. This time, the Treo 700p has changed all that...specification and feature-wise, it's a wonderful idea, but the final product itself is horrible. I've already had to return one because the earpiece went out, then the speaker, then the microphone, then the headset jack. Its replacement refuses to work whenever you load any piece of software on it. A $700 piece of junk...I am hoping that Sprint will either replace it with a working model this time, or allow me to downgrade to a different phone, because after all I've gone through, I don't even want to deal with a Treo, much less a Palm...I don't even visit the websites I used to anymore because the thrill is gone, so is the dependability. I will say this, my Palm TX is still reliable and faithful, but the Treo is out!!!

S. (Not blogging, driving a truck.) If you think about it I'm
selling my time with my family for a paycheck. Most people work 8-12 hours a
day and go home...I work 20-25 days and then go home, and yet you get paid
more than me. Why? You're the asshole who cuts me off in traffic nearly
causing a wreck, because you think you're that important. When in reality
you just endangered your life as well as mine and if I wasn't as skilled at
what I do, you might not have survived to ever see your family again.

I fear that one day my children will look me in the eye and say, "You were
never there for me then, why should I care if you here for me now."

S. Unlike most, I am not satisfied to just sit
idly by at my job and be satisfied with status quo. In order for me to
prosper, things must change...challenges must come and be conquered or at
least well attempted. It's amazing how so much ambition wells up inside me,
yet at the same time I feel stuck in my present predicament with no means
of escape. I share my dreams and goals with others and no one wants to help,
maybe they need to be left behind in search of new, true support. I learned that playing video poker or blackjack is just the same as playing it on the pocket pc or computer at home; there's no more thrill involved than if you weren't wasting your money. At the end we played a little roulette and table blackjack and I think we had more fun doing that than we did the rest of the time.

They what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, and when it comes to the women, they ain't lyin'. After your first year, you no longer have to think about this, it just becomes automatic.

During my senior year, Jason rose to the position of deputy Corp Commander and the rank of lt Colonel. I, in turn rose to the position of Senior Enlisted Advisor at the rank of Chief Master Sergeant. When we exchanged salutes it truly was out of respect. I Used to have a few co-workers, used to because I don't work there anymore, who used to frequent BBW clubs and sites. (For those of you who don't know, BBW stands for big beautiful women.) I look at this and think, ah, the ultra-support group for fat women and guys who are too desparate to go after a decent looking women.

I love to look at cause and effect...so let's look at this one. BBW support goes away. Fat women have no choice but to become thin or die trying, or live a life of lonliness and belittlement. Next men have to shape up, because no good looking women wants slob for a man. Bingo, we just solved America's weight problem. Now to just get people to change their minds (yeah, right) and get rid of the huggy-feely analysts that tell them it's okay. My quick response to that theory was that terrible two's was psychology's first excuse for bad parenting. Then I thought about what I had said...the more and more I thought about it, the more I realized I was right. If psychologists and analysts would stop making up excuses to make parents feel better about their mistakes, maybe they would start taking some responsibility for their children and their actions that are influencing their families. My favorite phrase when it comes to this is "dysfunctional family." mdeians always ham this idea up and i think they're right: who really had a "functional family" by the text book definition? The
strain of missing your family and them begging you to come home; especially
your children. I had to beg him in a way to just go two weeks with me in
the truck...the money will start coming in, which will relax things at
home, make the wife happier, and smooth things out.

From my room-mate, he forgot his paperwork yesterday, so they sent him back
to the hotel and rescheduled him for today. He failed his SQT in the
morning, and then failed it again in the afternoon, so they are sending him
back out on the road with a Training Engineer for another week. He wants to
quit too...but I am doing my best to convince him otherwise.

Let's talk about me for a change...I had a trip-planning session this
morning that totally kicked my ass...took me three and a half out of four
and a half hours. They love inserting tricks into their curriculum...and I
fell for a few but I think I was able to recover. I guess I'll find out in
the morning. Speaking of falling...while I was out negotiating the CDL
Driving Course, I swung the truck out to far on a turn and dropped the tire
in a drainage ditch...dropped it far enough to make the lugnuts hit the top
of the curb...think about how far of a drop that is. The drop was so hard,
not only did the truck bottom-out, but it shook so violently that it was
like being in a submarine that got struck by a torpedo.

All in all, I feel pretty stressed out right and I really miss my home, my
wife, my son, my mom, and my place. After mising out on Halloween last
night, I realized that this job is going to cause me to miss most of the
important moments in my son's life. One of the reasons I took this job was
to get away from home for a while, but I didn't think it would affect me
this deeply, this quickly...

I have to pass everything flawlessly tomorrow, or else I am prolong the
time before I get to go home...

S. I used to work as a travel agent and the one thing that
annoyed me more than a customer that didn't know where they wanted to go,
was listening to someone revel in their own tales of travel. "Oh, yeah we
took a week trip to the Bahamas and two cruises last year alone..." In my
head, I'm thinking: I don't give a fuck! It isn't any
worse than Clinton's scandals or any of the past president's. In fact I
feel that this 'error' is really insignificant compared to the other
scandals plaguing the past administrations.

Deep down, from what I've seen, this is nothing more than a smoke screen
from the Democrats. The Democrats cannot win at the polls, so they are
doing their best to tear apart the Republicans in office. This is merely
retaliation...if Valerie Flame had never concocted a plan to use her CIA
postion to aid her husband, Dick Chenney would never have had to
investigate a newspaper article involving Joe Wilson, Valerie's husband. So
we've come full circle, if there is anyone to blame in this whole ordeal,
let's blame Valerie Flame Wilson...in the end, I feel she got what she
deserved, but by a technicality, those involved in the investigation made a
slight slip, that normally IA could care less about, but in this instance,
was gobbled up by desperate Democrats in a desperate attempt to appear
productive on Capitol Hill.

Scooter Libby, should not have been indicted nor anyone else. If anyone, or
entity, should be investigated, it should be the CIA and their processes.

S. Although
there is rumor of new bills to be passed to block further gerrymandering.
Well, of course they want to block gerrymandering, the Democrats have
everything where they think they want it.

However, there is a problem, and this problem is more prevalent in the
north-eastern states. Just as there a fear of brain-drain of scientists
from Russia after the cold-war, there is population drain frm the
north-eastern states and these voters are heading toward GOP states. Most
people think, "Oh, no, this must spell trouble for Republican States."
Actually the numbers aren't that great, but they are significant.
Significant because it is going to lessen their home states population,
popular votes, and eventully seats in the House and electoral votes.

But Scott, what does this mean to Republican States? So far there is enough
established republicans that this drain isn't going to affect them. Now
let's look at the equation again: less Democrat power, same Republican
power...maybe it might be a good idea to let the gerry-mandering continue
if the Dems know what's good for them. Obviously they don't because you saw
who they tried to put in the White House last time, and we know who's
coming this time...if nothing else, this should be interesting to watch.

S. Healthcare, dental, and other insurances is a corporate priviledge,
not a right!

It used to be that the economy was booming and companies could afford to
offer all these wonderful benefits. Nowadays, this is not the case. Living
here in Texas, a broke white man cannot even find manual labor work because
the border-hoppers from Mexico are swarming and willing to work for pennies
on the dollar, and then send those pennies back to Mexico; futher weakening
the US Dollar.

I applaud the the Director of Homeland Security and his pledge to deport
all illegal immigrants back to their origninal country of escape.

My father might have been able to keep decent employment if it weren't for
illegal immigrants under-cutting him for wages at every job he ever worked
at. That is why I am prejudiced against Mexicans. I don't agree with their
culture, with their primary religion, and their foreign ethics.

If the Southern US didn't have to deal with all the welfare claims from
these people, that money could go to funding better projects like
education.

S. Before
he got back to his Eugene, Oregon home though, he had a few musings
about the joy of queuing:
I'm almost home. I'm in Philadelphia now, but will begin the long
train ride to Oregon on Saturday afternoon. It has been a great trip.

As my around-the-world adventure nears its final days, I am somewhat
melancholy that it is ending. I have had some great experiences and
met many wonderful people.

But, one thing that I will not miss is standing in lines. There are
lines to board trains and ferries. Then, there are pushing and shoving
lines to get off the very same. There are lines to purchase onward
travel tickets, lines for information, lines to check baggage, lines
for customs and immigration, and lines for passport control.

While lines in most Western European countries have a semblance of
order and civility, lines in China, Russia, and Greece maintain an air
of every man for himself. Often pushing and shoving is the rule,
rather than the exception. In England, the opposite is true. The
courtesy and politeness shown by the English almost outweighs the
imposition of having to stand in line.

Lines, lines, and more lines. At times I wanted to scream, "While I'm young!"

So, imagine for a moment what it would be like if a person became one
day younger for every hour spent standing in line. I know that this
sounds preposterous and incomprehensible, but humor me for a moment.
Imagine that through some miraculous discovery, man has found a way to
physiologically turn back the clock. All you have to do is stand in
line. Stand in a line 356 hours in one years time and you will
essentially remain the same age. Rack up 730 hours, and you are one
year younger.

A small device, would be permanently attached to your hip, (much like
one of those pedometers that you got as a kid by saving cereal box
tops – akin to standing in line because it took so long to save them).
This device would record the hours spent in lines, and the number of
days of youth regained.

Oh, how the world would change.

Instead of 40, pimply-faced teenagers behind the counter at McDonalds
– shouting out orders and running about like Keystone Kops – there
would be just one or two lonesome, but overworked employees. Those
cattle-gate-like devices used in such restaurants would stretch
hundreds of yards into a parking lot 10 times their current size.

To hear someone in the line ahead of you request a special order would
not trigger exasperation or a loss of patience. "Ten more minutes in
line here, and I've gained two days today."

Likewise, the bozo who wants his senior discount, might be questioned
by a suspicious counter person. But the crowd behind him would just
smile. Somebody might call out; "Way to go, Mac" or, "Check his I.D.
and his meter."

Cell phones would disappear. Praise the lord, and pass a roll of
quarters. Everyone would want to stand in line at public telephone
booths as well.

Concerts and sporting events would be great places to "pick up a few
days", while doctor's offices would do away with chairs in the waiting
rooms. The doctors would make people stand in line instead, providing
those same old 1978 issues of Good Housekeeping to keep your mind
vacant, but somewhat occupied.

A factory owner might be able to postpone buying an employee a gold
watch for retirement by taking out all but one of the plant's drinking
fountains, and making paychecks available only after waiting in a long
line.

Sensible shoes would become the byword, and all sorts of service
business would evolve to cater to those people standing in lines.
There would be vendors selling shoe shines, refreshments, newspapers,
and toys for the kids. "Sorry mister. All I got left are these
novelettes. Ran out of War and Peace a couple of hours ago."

People would relax more. They would become more patient – take life as
it comes, or in this case, ebbs and flows.

But the concept has its faults. "Yes, that's our son out there,
playing on his new swing set. He got his Ph.D. from the university
last year, but he is so obsessed with standing in lines that he's
regressed to the age of 12. His father and I just think that's a bit
young to work for IBM, so we had him move back home for a few years."

And, a husband might detest the thought of standing in a line, while
his wife might take the opposite view. As the gap in age would widen,
the marriage would fall apart. "I'm sorry honey. I just feel trapped
in this marriage. Besides, I know that you're not happy either. I see
the way you roll your eyes when my girlfriends and I talk about next
year's rally squad tryouts."

If standing in lines actually made a person younger, I would be
returning from my journey a very young man. However, it would have
taken me twice as long to complete the trip. Therefore, I would have
an intensification of the deep feelings of homesickness that I have
for friends and loved ones. The trip would have cost a great deal
more. I would have needed an extra bag or two for souvenirs and
trinkets, and just how many refrigerator magnets does a man need?

So, in retrospect, the whole thing is probably a bad idea. Ah hell, it
was just something I thought of while standing in line.

--
S.E. There aren’t very many places a person needs to get to that justify risking your life and those of others to get there quickly. Overall, my experience would be happier if ALL the other drivers would know how to drive properly.

**Don’t try to drive up my ass. I know it’s fine (see above), but I don’t want your Buick parked in it!
**On a 6-lane highway, slow traffic goes on the right, fast traffic goes in the middle, and passing traffic goes on the left. Don’t pass people on the right.
**Once you’ve passed someone, get back in the middle or right hand lane. It might feel like your road because you pay a lot of taxes, but guess what? I really think it’s MY ROAD, and I’m being generous enough to share it.
**Wear your seatbelt, ya Dipshit. Anyone who doesn’t … hmmm, I’m not even gonna bother with the stats. You’re just a Dipshit!
**Be careful around motorcycles. Those little guys don’t have a hell of a lot to protect them if your big ‘ol SUV slams into them. So far the trial airbag systems just shoot the drivers off the back and don’t really help a lot.
**Don’t throw cigarette butts out your window after you’ve just passed a motorcycle.
Respect truck drivers ! ! ! These people are doing their job. When you do dumb shit, you not only risk their lives; you fuck with their livelihood. Stay back far enough so you can see their mirrors … then they can see you. Don’t pull in front of them and slow down. It takes them a lot longer to slow down than a regular ‘ol car. In general, if it looks like they need some space, get outta their way.
**When someone is merging, move over … ya know, like when you’re merging and you need space. Merging can be fun, but only with willing partners.
**Inclined to get a bit of Road Rage? Here’s an idea: entice the other party to pull into a Highway Patrol Station. Once there, get out of your car and get into a screaming match until you get an officer’s attention. Then taunt the other person until they lose control and hit you. Then get back in your car with the satisfaction that they will be spending some time dealing with an assault charge.
**THINK about the fact that you’re in control of a really heavy object that’s moving at a very high speed … I’ll wait while you ponder that thought. Be careful.

S. In the course of reading "Beyond Positive Thinking," by Dr Robert Anthony, I have realised that there is a way out of the hole that I feel I have dug. The change must begin within me. I know, you thinking this is great...this is what all psychologists say. You're right, but do the rest of the head shrinkers out there give you the tools to fight back when you're back-sliding? I'm only on chapter 3, but the little that I have read so far has helped me tremendously. I have turned a lot of things around in my head, like making myself believe that I am a good spouse, that my son is not a burden to me, and that I can handle my job effectively. I am learning the power of self talk; both the positive effects and the negative, and I am trying my best to limit the negative, while empowering the positive.

S. He has gained one oz. since he was born. It's not much, but he is eating well. We also went and he had to get his 2 week blood test done today. He did not like that at all. Overall I'd say he was very good for his appointments today. Scott and I had lunch at this vintage diner he and his dad used to go to all the time. It's called Olmo's Drug Store. I hope we can get some kind of sleep tonight.

My First Mother's Day

My first Mother's Day was awesome. Scott started off my special day. I got three cards and the most beautiful heart shaped glass figure with a mom tribute. The glass heart was so pretty I forgot all about the cards. Grandma also gave me a card to celebrate. While Scott was at work my sister Marjorie and her family came by to see me. My niece Jessica was really excited to see and hold the baby. I got pictures of everyone holding Leo. She brought me some flowers, a card, and a heart shaped magnet with a sister tribute. The baby got a little white bear sticking out of a bag that says "It's a Boy". We had a great visit. Later my other sister Jo came by with her family. The kids are just crazy about Leo. Everyone goes on and on about how cute he is. Scott and I are so lucky to have such a gorgeous baby. Jo brought me a card too. She gave me my mother's day present early when I was in the hospital. It was a silver cross necklace. Leo got a cross too for his birthday present. I got more pictures of everyone with Leo. When Scott came home he started on dinner. He bar-b-qued for us and waited on me for the night while I relaxed and watched the Spurs game. Once again, my day was AWESOME! I loved the visit with my family and everyone truly went out of their way to make it special. Thank you ALL!!!

Mondays...

Mondays bring about a whole new kind of hate at Travelocity...especially Mondays after a holiday. Right now I am putting in two 12 hour shifts, back-to-back on less then 2 hours sleep...I think this qualifies as stressed; that is if I can stay awake long enough. Anyway, I was standing at the urinal doing my thing and I popped my neck, rather loudly...it kind of made me a little light-headed. I thought to myself this probably isn't a good place to be doing this and I really don't want someone coming in here finding me dead in a puddle of my own pee with my dick in my hand...newspapers would have a field day with that one!

S. Things at home with Baby Leo and I are going well. It's a struggle for both of us right now. He gets fussy when it's time to eat. It's hard to know what I am supposed to be doing. Scott's advise has helped me a lot. I always go to him when I'm unsure of what I am doing. He doesn't always have the answers, but he tries. I'm recovering well from the C-section. I am feeling better and can do more around the house. I feel pretty good about my clothes fitting better. There are so many little things I can do now that I haven't been able to do in months such as touching my toes. i get bored at home some times. Most of all I miss Scott when he's at work. Once we got to the hospital they started hooking her up to everything...magnesium sulfate to counter the toxemia, pitosin to induce labor, saline, blood pressure cuff, and her "favorite" catheter. As labor failed to progress they had to break her water and attach the internal monitors. After three hours at 5cm, the OBdecided that a C-section was in everyone's best interests...good thing too, because we later learned, the head wouldn't have fit!

Much to my amazement, even after all the medication they pumped into Dallas, the baby still came out fine...no heart or breathing problems. Julie and Judie, along with their associate editors review numerous products and give us the good, the bad, and the ugly.

One review I came across was for the Sony AIBO. For those of you who don't know...this Sony's version of a robotic dog. One particular excert from the review struck me funny so I decided to post it here:

"When the AIBO does something that you like, you can either pet it on its head (there is a sensor there) or you can say Good Boy or Good Girl. Conversely, if the dog does something that you don't want it to do, you can thwap him on the head or say Bad Boy/Girl. Eventually AIBO will learn to do the good actions more than the bad ones. The NSA access system is built into every version of the Windows operating system now in use, except early releases of Windows 95 (and its predecessors). The discovery comes close on the heels of the revelations earlier this year that another US software giant, Lotus, had built an NSA "help information" trapdoor into its Notes system, and that security functions on other software systems had been deliberately crippled.
The first discovery of the new NSA access system was made two years ago by British researcher Dr Nicko van Someren. But it was only a few weeks ago when a second researcher rediscovered the access system. With it, he found the evidence linking it to NSA.
Computer security specialists have been aware for two years that unusual features are contained inside a standard Windows software "driver" used for security and encryption functions. The driver, called ADVAPI.DLL, enables and controls a range of security functions. If you use Windows, you will find it in the C:\Windows\system directory of your computer.
ADVAPI.DLL works closely with Microsoft Internet Explorer, but will only run crypographic functions that the US governments allows Microsoft to export. That information is bad enough news, from a European point of view. Now, it turns out that ADVAPI will run special programmes inserted and controlled by NSA. As yet, no-one knows what these programmes are, or what they do.
Dr Nicko van Someren reported at last year's Crypto 98 conference that he had disassembled the ADVADPI driver. He found it contained two different keys. One was used by Microsoft to control the cryptographic functions enabled in Windows, in compliance with US export regulations. But the reason for building in a second key, or who owned it, remained a mystery.
A second key
Two weeks ago, a US security company came up with conclusive evidence that the second key belongs to NSA. Like Dr van Someren, Andrew Fernandez, chief scientist with Cryptonym of Morrisville, North Carolina, had been probing the presence and significance of the two keys. Then he checked the latest Service Pack release for Windows NT4, Service Pack 5. He found that Microsoft's developers had failed to remove or "strip" the debugging symbols used to test this software before they released it. Inside the code were the labels for the two keys. One was called "KEY". The other was called "NSAKEY".
Fernandes reported his re-discovery of the two CAPI keys, and their secret meaning, to "Advances in Cryptology, Crypto'99" conference held in Santa Barbara. According to those present at the conference, Windows developers attending the conference did not deny that the "NSA" key was built into their software. But they refused to talk about what the key did, or why it had been put there without users' knowledge.
A third key?!
But according to two witnesses attending the conference, even Microsoft's top crypto programmers were astonished to learn that the version of ADVAPI.DLL shipping with Windows 2000 contains not two, but three keys. Brian LaMachia, head of CAPI development at Microsoft was "stunned" to learn of these discoveries, by outsiders. The latest discovery by Dr van Someren is based on advanced search methods which test and report on the "entropy" of programming code.
Within the Microsoft organisation, access to Windows source code is said to be highly compartmentalized, making it easy for modifications to be inserted without the knowledge of even the respective product managers.
Researchers are divided about whether the NSA key could be intended to let US government users of Windows run classified cryptosystems on their machines or whether it is intended to open up anyone's and everyone's Windows computer to intelligence gathering techniques deployed by NSA's burgeoning corps of "information warriors".
According to Fernandez of Cryptonym, the result of having the secret key inside your Windows operating system "is that it is tremendously easier for the NSA to load unauthorized security services on all copies of Microsoft Windows, and once these security services are loaded, they can effectively compromise your entire operating system". The NSA key is contained inside all versions of Windows from Windows 95 OSR2 onwards.
"For non-American IT managers relying on Windows NT to operate highly secure data centres, this find is worrying", he added. "The US government is currently making it as difficult as possible for "strong" crypto to be used outside of the US. That they have also installed a cryptographic back-door in the world's most abundant operating system should send a strong message to foreign IT managers".
"How is an IT manager to feel when they learn that in every copy of Windows sold, Microsoft has a 'back door' for NSA - making it orders of magnitude easier for the US government to access your computer?" he asked.
Can the loophole be turned round against the snoopers?
Dr van Someren feels that the primary purpose of the NSA key inside Windows may be for legitimate US government use. But he says that there cannot be a legitimate explanation for the third key in Windows 2000 CAPI. "It looks more fishy", he said.
Fernandez believes that NSA's built-in loophole can be turned round against the snoopers. The NSA key inside CAPI can be replaced by your own key, and used to sign cryptographic security modules from overseas or unauthorised third parties, unapproved by Microsoft or the NSA. This is exactly what the US government has been trying to prevent. A demonstration "how to do it" program that replaces the NSA key can be found on Cryptonym's website.
According to one leading US cryptographer, the IT world should be thankful that the subversion of Windows by NSA has come to light before the arrival of CPUs that handles encrypted instruction sets. These would make the type of discoveries made this month impossible. "Had the next-generation CPU's with encrypted instruction sets already been deployed, we would have never found out about NSAKEY."

S. Though salary growth has been relatively sluggish since the 2001 downturn, inflation also had stayed relatively subdued until last year, when the consumer price index rose 2.7%. But wages rose only 2.5%.

The effective 0.2-percentage-point erosion in workers' living standards occurred while the economy expanded at a healthy 4%, better than the 3% historical average.

Meanwhile, corporate profits hit record highs as companies got more productivity out of workers while keeping pay increases down.

Some see climbing profits and stagnant wages as not only unfair but also ultimately unsustainable. "Those that are baking the larger pie ought to see their slices expanding," said Jared Bernstein, an economist with the liberal Economic Policy Institute in Washington.

But higher wages could hurt the economy by stoking inflation further. Employers might pass the costs on to consumers in higher prices, and that in turn might prompt the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates more aggressively, possibly slowing the recovery or even triggering a recession.

For now, workers' wallets are being pummeled by something of a perfect storm of economic forces: a weak job market, rising health insurance premiums and other inflationary pressures.

The biggest factor is the slack employment market, which means there is little pressure on businesses to boost pay. "They take advantage of you because there's no work and anyone will work for anything," Romero said.

Although the unemployment rate has dropped to a relatively low 5.2%, that figure doesn't count the hundreds of thousands of jobless people who've given up their searches and dropped out of the labor market at a greater rate than anytime since 1988. At the same time, the cost of health premiums has skyrocketed, eating into the pool of corporate cash set aside for raises. Although pay rose only about 2.4% last year, benefit costs jumped almost 7%.

With benefits factored in, workers' total compensation did outpace inflation in 2004, even if they didn't see it in their paychecks. But employers also are requiring workers to pay a greater share of their premiums.

"Healthcare has eroded the wage base," said Janemarie Mulvey, chief economist with the Employment Policy Foundation, a business-funded think tank in Washington.

"In the long run, we can't continue like this. If healthcare keeps crowding out wages forever, something's got to give."

The squeeze is especially intense on the 47% of the workforce whose employers don't directly provide their health insurance. For lower-income workers, who are more likely to be uninsured, the falling value of their wages is even more serious because they're more likely to live paycheck to paycheck. And rising food and energy prices take a proportionately higher toll on the poor than on the rich.

Historically, periods when wage growth is outpaced by inflation rarely last more than 18 months. That's partly because businesses don't want their employees' living standards to fall, as that injures morale, said Trewman Bewley, a Yale University economist who has studied wage activity during economic downturns.

Many economists figure it's only a matter of time until workers can pry more money out of their employers to catch up to inflation again. If economic growth remains robust, as many forecasters predict, workers may gain greater leverage to negotiate wage hikes.

"Chances are that those workers that have problems getting by because of higher fuel prices will probably tell their employers, 'I can't make it,' " said John Lonski, chief economist at Moody's Investors Service.

That hasn't played out for Brian Chartier. The 29-year-old Glendale resident handles inventory for a Los Angeles manufacturing company. No one there, he said, has gotten a raise in two years.

"They're able to do this and I haven't quit, because where am I going to go?" he said. "There are no jobs."

While his salary remained flat, rising healthcare premiums kept eating up more and more of Chartier's take-home pay, so he dropped out of his employer's insurance program. His rent is also climbing.

As Chartier loaded bags of groceries into his Honda Civic last week, he boasted that they were full of bargains. "I don't get a single thing that's not on sale," Chartier said. "I can't afford to anymore."

Despite the failure of their wages to keep pace with inflation, American consumers have kept shopping. Consumer spending has continued to rise. Analysts say that's partly because some shoppers are thinking less about their paychecks and more about their biggest asset: their homes.

Home prices rose 21.1% in Southern California and 9% nationwide from February 2004 to February 2005, sheltering consumers, and the economy, from much of the pinch of higher prices.

"There's been a wealth effect afoot throughout much of the recession and the recovery," said Bernstein of the Economic Policy Institute, "because no matter what people's incomes were doing, their wealth was improving — their biggest assets, their homes, were accruing."

As inflation sparks higher interest rates, most economists expect the housing market to cool, making shoppers more dependent on their paychecks. And even those who have seen their paper wealth rise phenomenally aren't happy about rising costs and stagnant pay.

Corina Swatz has seen the value of her Silver Lake home triple in about a decade. But neither she nor her husband has gotten a raise in more than a year. Meanwhile, gas prices have forced them to shell out $55 to fill the tank of their Chevy Tahoe.

"I used to spend $600 a month [on groceries]. Now I spend $800," Swatz, a mother of two, said as she made her weekly Costco run last week. The increased value of her home gives her only so much solace. "We're hanging in there."

The danger is that people like Swatz, despite their home equity cushion, may pull the rug out from under the economic expansion by reining in their spending.

That's what Gabriel Torres has done. The 56-year-old cook, who lives in Hollywood, hasn't gotten a raise in years but pays ever-higher prices to fill his Nissan Xterra. He and his wife have come up with a solution: Cut down on driving.

"We don't go out much," Torres said. "We used to. But now we only drive when we really have to."

S. This leads to publicity over things like web addiction, video game addiction, internet addiction, text messaging addiction and many other such claims. While it's nice to at least see the latest technology-induced problem a psychologist describes is not called an addiction, it still sounds a bit overstated. A psychologist who studies attention deficit disorder (ADD) is now claiming that many people in today's high tech workplace are suffering from a related disorder he calls attention deficit trait (ADT). The concept is that you're not born with ADT, but it's induced by a workplace that forces you to multi-task all the time -- and that it's easily cured by getting out of that environment. He also claims that "multi-tasking" is impossible for humans, which some might disagree with -- but he does make some valid points on getting people to occasionally stop and actually think about things. Taking a longer term viewpoint is often very useful. Still, it's not clear that it's really reached the "epidemic" stage that this guy claims. If anything, it seems that as more companies recognize the importance of a better work/life balance, this becomes less of an issue. That means not doing stupid things like banning solitaire -- which acts as a mental break, or trying desperately to stop all personal activities at work. In fact, the psychologist points out that it's often the tech companies who are better able to diffuse this "ADT" stuff by understanding the importance of "play" at work. As such ideas diffuse more widely into the workplace, it seems like this problem shouldn't be such a big issue.

S. Before I graduated high school, I began to notice the over-compensation in American Society with regards to racism and gender equal rights.

Now don't get me wrong, I am all for equality; ethnically and sexually. One of the greatest arguments in high school between the ROTC department and the feminists involved was that women were not, and still not allowed to serve on Special Forces Teams in the military. The pinnacle of the debate was that if the requirement for women to be able to join these teams would they be have to earn that position at the same qualification level as the men, and at age 18 all women would have to register for the draft just like men do. Guess, what their response was, "No Way!" What they wanted was to have it handed to them, something I am not for at all.

It's well known fact nowadays by most white males that their chance of employment is less than someone else of a different gender or sex. The reason behind this is because if the company does hire the white guy, then the other applicant will scream racism or gender-bias. What happens if the white male sues for racism or gender-bias, he gets laughed at in court. Put 12 white male jurists in that court and he'll win. Not because of favoritism or the "good ole boy network," but because they know it's true too.

One thing I do want to point out about the article is the comment about your mission is to find a silent women. This is I disagree with...If God had intended for women to be silent, he would have made her walk on all fours with the rest of the animals, not able to stand on two legs and look us in the eye.

Look around you, is it equality, or reverse racism and reverse gender-bias?

S.
